Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Yola North Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State has faced persistent challenges related to conflict and insecurity, which have been influenced by a combination of geopolitical factors. These factors include ethnic divisions, political rivalries, and regional instability, particularly given Adamawa's proximity to neighboring conflict zones in the North East (Bashir & Ibrahim, 2023). As a result, peacebuilding efforts in Yola North have been deeply affected by the geopolitical context, with local leadership, inter-community relations, and state and federal intervention strategies playing crucial roles in either fostering or hindering peace.
Geopolitical strategies in Yola North have evolved over time in response to the region's complex security dynamics, particularly in terms of fostering dialogue, addressing ethnic tensions, and promoting reconciliation between different communities. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies and their impact on peacebuilding, focusing on local government initiatives and community-driven approaches.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to enhance peacebuilding in Yola North, the area continues to experience frequent outbreaks of violence, which are exacerbated by geopolitical factors such as ethnic divisions, political marginalization, and regional conflicts. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of existing peacebuilding strategies, identify the challenges faced by local authorities, and propose measures for improving peace efforts in the region.
